Genetically modified foods (GMO’s) have been contentious since they were first introduced. Each new genetically modified seed has caused concerns with those involved with the organic farming community. The recent ruling by the US Department of Agriculture (USDA) to allow GMO alfalfa has caused major concerns to the organic food industry. The impact of GMO alfalfa may change the face of much of organic farming as alfalfa is a key food for livestock and dairy cattle. Genetically modified alfalfa has a gene inserted to allow it be resistant to the herbicide Roundup (glyphosate). Use of this GMO alfalfa will result in approximately 23 million more pounds of glyphosate being released into the environment yearly. When added to the nearly 531 million pounds already used in the United States on other crops. This represents nearly a five percent increase of glyphosate release into our environment. Recently the Center for Food Safety and Earthjustice filed a lawsuit against the US Department of Agriculture to argue that the approval of GMO alfalfa was unlawful. The Center for Food Safety had previously brought a suit in 2007 against the USDA which resulted in 4 year court mandated study on genetically modified alfalfa.Just like bacteria can become resistant to antibiotics,www.dreamlouisvuittonofficialwebsite.com, weeds are also getting more and more resistant to herbicides such as glyphosate. This results in an increased use of herbicides to control the increasingly resistant weed strains. Alfalfa because of how it grows is already naturally resistant to weed infestation because of its dense growth. As a result alfalfa has often been used as a rotation to give land a natural break from the use of herbicides. There are those such as Dr. Don Huber retired scientist from Purdue who warmed the Agriculture Secretary that certain herbicides may be contributing to abortions and infertility in livestock. Glyphosate can predispose plants to disease and toxins according to Dr. Huber. Dr. Huber says “Toxins produced can infect the root and head of the plant . . .the toxin levels in straw can be high enough to make cattle and pigs infertile.” The Institute of Science in Society has called for a global ban on glyphosate because they claim glyphosate is highly toxic to human cells. So why is alfalfa so upsetting to the organic community? It starts with the cross pollination of the honeybee. Honeybees have a range of 5 miles or more from their hives. So a honeybee can easily carry pollens from fields of GMO alfalfa to wild growing alfalfa or natural alfalfa. This would cause the natural varieties of alfalfa to become cross contaminated with the genetic material of the GMO alfalfa. Organic meat and organic dairy producers would find it difficult to keep their animals from exposure to GMO alfalfa. Many farmers may have to give up organic production or find a different crop to feed their animals, resulting in a decreased supply of organic food due to increase in feed costs. The natural result of decreased supply is an increased cost to you to consumer for organic milk, louis vuitton bags, dairy and beef. The United States continues to expand products of GMO’s while Japan, louis vuitton handbags, Egypt and the EU have banned GMO foods. Lomg term effects of their use are not well studied and we as a country seem to have more concerns about the business side of agriculture while being unconcerned about effects on the food supply.
